Teaching Practising Certificate (TPC)

What is a Teaching Practising Certificate?

The Teaching Practising Certificate (TPC) recognises the value, skills and knowledge of those teachers engaged in dyslexia/SpLD specialist teaching and tutoring and their commitment to best practice. Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they have carried out a minimum of 20 hours specialist teaching /tuition that has been completed in the year prior to their application. A Teaching Practising Certificate is valid for three years.

Who can apply for a TPC?

Applicants should hold Approved Teacher/Practitioner Status (ATS/APS), Approved Teacher/Practitioner Status Dyscalculia (ATD/APD) or have completed an equivalent specialist teaching qualification and hold Professional Membership of the BDA or Associate Membership of the BDA (AMBDA). This membership must be held during the period for which the TPC is valid.

How to apply for a TPC

• Download and complete the TPC application form
• Agree to adhere to the BDA Code of Ethics
• Commit to continuing professional development (CPD)
• Submit 2 letters of recommendation from appropriately qualified professionals, demonstrating their knowledge of your practice
• Pay the £60 TPC fee; payment options are on the application form

Renewing a TPC

To renew a Teaching Practising Certificate applicants will need to complete a minimum of 20 hours CPD within the three years of their existing TPC.

• Complete the CPD log and provide attendance certificates
• Submit letters of recommendation from two appropriately qualified professionals, demonstrating their knowledge of your practice
• Pay the £60 TPC renewal fee
